One of the captured soldiers that was shown answering questions on Iraqi television said that he was with the 507th, but he didn't say what branch he was with. There is one in the Army and the Air Force.
I was in the one in the Air Force, but it has become a refueling unit and not a maintenance unit, so I doubt he was from my old unit. But it is scary to think that some of my old co-workers, or hell, it could have been me since we were a F-16 unit before they switched our mission, might have been captured. Little too close to home for me, that's for damn sure.
On of the bad things about watching the war live on tv, or listening to it on the radio, is that the media are trying to have 24 hour coverage of something that only happens in waves.
So, in the down time of nothing happening, besides rehashing what happened last wave, they make all kinds of astute observations such as, "With all of these soldiers surrendering, it will either be good for the coalition, or it won't." Well, no fucking shit Sherlock. Usually things are either one or the other. Really hate the talking heads sometimes.
But one of the really weird things, thanks to all this "technology" is the live videophone feeds from the moving convoys/tanks. Very, very surreal to see this happening "live" on television, or tivo even, since it doesn't realize it needs to get its war on, and it keeps recording what it hopes are shows I will like, instead it gets fed 24/7 news.
And since I listen to streams at work, I was happy to find this site that had all of these different live news streams from all over the world. So now, I can try and get different perspectives on what's happening from other countries. And, I get to listen to dumbass interviewers from around the world ask brilliant questions such as the one I heard yesterday, who was interviewing one of the Iraqi Foreign Ministers who had just complained that the US were liars and were killing thousands of innocent civilians, when the interviewer asked him, "So, how do you feel about what is happening in your country right now?". *shakes head* Sheesh.
So, mom talked to this Debbie in TX that had that other truck of Bo's and they are bringing it back up either tonight or tomorrow.
She talked to Pete today, who told her that they couldn't come after her for that debt, which was really cool. He just told her to get the truck back to the Credit Union and basically they will have to eat the balance. Oh, and that they couldn't come after the house. Which is sweet.
She is going to try to go see him on monday with the death certificate and all of the other mounds of paperwork and try to get all of this settled. Almost done now.
Gotta love Apple's press release about Al Gore joining their Board of Director's.
Hey, I found some information on that band that's going to be playing in Perth.
Looks like they are a late-70's, early 80's rock band that only released a couple things in the US, so they didn't get to be big here. But they seem to get pretty good reviews, granted most of the reviewers are from down under.
Anyway, I can't hear anything from them right now, but it reads like their show would be alot of fun.
I kid, I kid.
So, yeah, this war, er, disarmament of the Iraqi regime, that the POTUS got himself, umm, us, into started last night and the media blitz is on.
Personally, I get most of my up to date information online - this IS the first "war" with the internet. One of the interesting things I found (via Popculturejunkmail, (and then mefi), was a blog from an Iraqi guy called "Where is Raed?". Pretty interesting to get a perspective of a native resident living through this, as opposed to a journalist just visiting for the duration.
Now we just need to find out if Saddam's speech was pre-recorded and we got him, or not.
It was an okay movie with the Corey's in it, but some of the music is what was what made it really good.
One of the songs on the soundtrack is called "Into the Mystic" by Van Morrison, and I must say that it is probably on my Top Ten list. When I hear it, like I did today, with the windows down and enjoying the gorgeous day, it reminds me of when I used to drive to go see this guy I really liked.
He had made me a tape to listen to on the drive back and forth to Weatherford when I would come see him - every other weekend and every Wednesday. Man, I must have been really into him alot because I would get up at 6:30am on Thursday mornings and drive an hour and a half - into the rising sun - to get to work. Anyway, at the end of side one was this song, "Into the Mystic" and I would be jamming away with it and about 2/3rds of the way into it, it would stop and click over to the other side of the cassette - he had run out of room. So, I never got to hear the end of that song.
It's funny, when I hear the song now, I still know exactly where the song used to stop and always mentally hear the click in my head.
Man, I miss that boy.
Natey brought his report card home today. It is great, like it has been. In fact, almost exact same marks in everything.
To quote his teacher:
"Nathan is doing great in his academics and he is doing better with respecting
his teacher! :) Thank you!
Guess he has cut down on his "Fuck you, beaatch!"'s, and it seems to be helping.
Yep, saving up for therapy - you can always get grants for college.
Here's what I don't get. What the hell was Don Johnson doing with, basically, $8 BILLION (USD value) in cash, stocks and bonds in his car?
I kinda agree with what someone was quoted as saying in another article (tat i really wish I could find again) about this - when questioned as to what Johnson was doing with that much with him, he stated he was going to buy a car, and this guy said, "Buy a car? Damn, he could buy the whole factory." No shit.
Seriously, even if it was legit, or maybe especially if it was legit, wouldn't you have like a armored courier service handle that much? I mean, sure, carry a few million around if you must (heh), but leave the bulk of it for someone else to carry. 'Course, I doubt they would be as clever as Don was, by hiding in the lining of his suitcase. Sheesh.
Which we weren't but I am now.
Beau put up some clips from my appearance on the Weakest Link game show that finally aired last month. I didn't win, but I did get to say "oh shit" on national tv. And really, isn't that better than $28,000, anyway? Yeah, I don't really think so either.
Oh, and if you are so inclined to see what other media-whoriness I have done, there is a media page that has some clips on there. Because you know you just have to see me look like a dork on tv, you just have to.
*eta - I just found out that my episode was aired during a special week of shows where the contestants actually made the $25K bank. Guess that is a rarity. Doesn't really help much, tho. But at least I was voted off because he knew I would beat his little inbred ass. And that's what gets me through the day. uh-huh. yeah.
After much head-slapping and plenty of "doh's" to go around this thing is finally publishing - much to the chagrin of plenty of people, no doubt*.
*Not that the band No Doubt has anything against me, you see - it's just an expression. Yeah, I know - see what I mean? heh
I got an email back from the soccer club guy yesterday that gave me the number of the U6 coordinator (he had also cc'd him on the email). I called him but he hasn't called back yet.
So, I figure I am going to call a couple of the kids parents that were on the team last season and see what they are doing, etc. and if they are on the same team, I will just show up on Saturday and have Nathan just play with that team.
Crap, if they can't even take care of the younger groups, then why would those kids want to stay there and go on to the older competitive teams? Let alone, be able to convince a MLS team to come here and be a franchise.
I got this family newsletter thing in the mail from my loony Aunt Linda today. It's like 3 pages long, not including the address log at the back. And in it Linda goes on about how this is just her updates and if you don't like it, too bad, she's the one paying the postage. (insert one of Linda's really loud, smoking for 47 years, laughs here).
I don't mind these - I think it is funny to see other peoples perspectives of themselves and their families and compare it to my own, which usually don't always match up. Anyway, I am reading thru it and it talks about my step-dad dying last month and how my mom was handling it and dealing with my now ex-Jerry Spriner-esque family, and it mentions what a couple of my uncle's and my brother had done (he had changed the locks on her doors). Not any mention of myself and any of the things I had done, which, none were monetary, just stuff like, extending a bed, a shoulder, taking her to the hospital to collect his items, taking her to the funeral home to arrange things, taking her to the bank and straightening out some financial matters and going through the insurance stuff. Nothing really worth mentioning I guess - oh wait, I just did. Sorry.
But surely that was just a front page oversite. So I keep reading.
She goes on and on about just about everyone else and their spouses and children for another two pages. Even mentioned my brother again and the fact that he has went to work for Devon Energy, except she called it something else, and alluded to the OTC scandals as the reason he wasn't doing this anymore. Except, she failed to mention that I WAS still doing this and that Oklahoma Fleet was still around. Yeah, I'm still here, plugging away - just like I did when I started this company and David came to work here 9 months after I started it. But, I digress. Surely not mentioning anything about me when talking a bit about my company was just an oversite.
Then I get to the address page. Now, my name and phone number are there, but not my address - like it was unavailable. Like it wasn't the one she mailed the stupid newsletter to in the first place.
Sheesh. Maybe its a good thing to not be remembered as being related to this family.
So, Nathan has decided to become his own person - new name and all. He now goes by Nate, at least when he has to write it down.
Now, some people would say, "Oh, that's great. Growing up. Becoming himself." blah blah blah. Not me. I say it's because he is a lazy turd. Seriously. I noticed it when he needed to address his Valentine's Day cards for school. After the second of 22 he decided he wanted to write "Nate" instead. He said, "I just like the name." was his explanation. 'Course, when you are first learning to write your letters, dropping two letters from your name on 20 things can save alot of writing - and if your lazy. But, they were his cards, he could sign them whatever.
Another reason why I think it's just cuz he is being too lazy to write it out is that he doesn't want to go by Nate when people address him. He is perfectly fine with anyone calling him Nathan, or whatever comes out of momma and daddy's mouths. So, see? No continuity = no dedication. He cracks me up. I don't know where he gets this shi...stuff.
Who knew that my favorite cd would be a compliation of songs from people like John Denver, Randy Travis, Bare Naked Ladies and The Corrs?
(that is "The Corrs", right?)
