Phone solicitations
Funniest thing happened at the office today. A man called in and asked to speak to my partner:
man: "May I speak to David K.?"
me: "He's not in today. May I take a message?"
man: "No, I will call back tomorrow."
At this point I have figured out by the background sounds and his not wanting to leave a message that this is a unsolicited solictitation. So I decided to push a little.
me: "May I ask who is calling?"
man: (with a bit of a nervous chuckle) "Jack F."
me: "And who are you with?" (expecting the hang up any second)
man: "Ma'am, I ....." (voice trailing off)
me: "If this is a solicitation..." (before I can finish my sentence)
man: "I resent you not letting me hang up." (to which I responded)
me: "Sir, you are free to hang...."
and before I could finish my thought, he did the "solicitor shuffle", hung up on me and ran away.
That is the first time I have ever had a salesman say they resented me. How about I resent the fact that I didn't ask you to call in the first place? And I didn't wasn't even rude to him and hang up in the first place (he caught me in a good mood), instead, I was simply trying to get information for my partner to say, "Hey, this Jack F. guy called from _____ Co. and he said he would call you back." I don't think that was too much to ask from him. But I guess he did.
Ya' know, I doubt he will call back which guarantees he won't get a sale, but he might, and I stress might, have gotten one if he had just simply stated where he who he was with, instead, he has become the joke of the day. I love sales calls.
